By utilizing a STEM based curriculum and leveraging Project Based Learning (PBL) we can both compliment and supplement the regular school day curriculum with a program that is highly motivating. We leverage the natural curiosity inherent in children to create an enjoyable experience which leads to fantastic results. Research has shown that when programs expose students to STEM within the context of a Project Based Learning Framework, it leads to an increase in the long-term retention of content. Additionally, this framework helps students to perform as well as or better than traditional learners in high-stakes tests, they show an increase in problem-solving and collaboration skills, and improved attitudes towards learning (Strobel & van Barneveld, 2009; Walker & Leary, 2009).
We saw firsthand the power that STEM based before and after school programs had on students. Our very first programs were created for our own students and from early on we saw the positive effects that such programs had on them. Before school, after school, and vacation day programs that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) have been shown to improve attitudes toward STEM fields and careers, increase test scores (as compared to non-participants), enhance the likelihood that students will pursue college and increase the intention of majoring in the STEM fields. When robotics, coding and other high-tech curricular components are added, this same research has shown even more pronounced effects on math test scores, science test scores, and overall academic achievement. Having seen it with our children we felt that it was imperative for us to bring high quality STEM programs to other students throughout the country.
