Over the past 35 years before and after school programs have evolved from childcare programs developed by early childhood providers to health and fitness based programs to programs that now have also added homework completion to their repertoire. Even though most of these programs offer some element of all three of these categories, it is easy to identify their early childhood DNA. When applied to programs for students in grade school, these programs represent nothing more than glorified “babysitting,” with staff that are barely trained to offer anything beyond supervisory care. Either these providers do not have the time, energy or resources to provide an exemplary before and after school experience for all age groups or they simply do not have the know-how. Despite the best intentions, an early childhood approach to education for grade school students is not always age appropriate. For schools that operate their own programs, while the reasoning tends to differ the same outcomes tend to hold true. It is a challenge to provide an exemplary school experience while also trying to build, manage and execute an additional 3-5 hours of before and after school programming. What these providers all have in common is that they are stuck in the past. This is an unfortunate reality, but one that Innovation Learning was created to fix.
In this age of academic accountability, schools are expected to successfully navigate a variety of challenges for producing results in the areas of social/emotional learning, academic achievement, health and wellness (to name a few) while competing against one another for students. Resources such as time cannot be wasted and every aspect of everything that a school does must be tied back to their academic mission and vision if they are to adequately provide for all the varied needs of their students. Schools cannot do it alone and require community based partners that understand the educational landscape and can assist them with the heavy lifting. This new age, requires a new approach to extended day programs, or a “connected learning partner” that can help schools by supporting their mission and vision which includes helping them to meet their academic goals.
As a connected learning partner Innovation Learning designs and implements a program that includes, enrichment opportunities, STEM-based programming and proven pedagogy such as Project Based Learning (PBL) that is tailored to the individual needs of your school curriculum. We are a true education organization founded by former teachers, administrators and doctoral level educators who understand the importance of continuous communication, a willingness to share resources and the desire to support your mission and vision. We leverage valuable before and after school time hours to build capacity by both complementing or supplementing your curriculum. We use licensed educators to offer both remediation of learning deficiencies and learning acceleration which when done in tandem during before and after school time has been shown to produce positive impacts on knowledge and skills.
